Why it’s okay to go to the cinema alone

Why it’s okay to go to the cinema alone

Personally, I enjoy nothing more than going to the cinema – it’s my thing. I often go alone, but whenever I tell my friends that my evening plans are eating my body weight in popcorn and watching one of the latest releases by myself they often look at me in disbelief, and it’s usually followed with an eye-roll.

But why?

We live in a world where being on your own in public situations makes you a ‘loner’ but I can promise you, there is no greater pleasure than enjoying a film alone and I’m here to give you some reasons why…

You don’t have to endure questions

This is one of my biggest pet hates, when your friends ask you questions as if you’ve seen the film before or have some newly found psychic abilities that can predict what is going to happen –  JUST WATCH THE FILM.

You don’t have to get dressed up

It’s gonna be dark in that screening so who cares if you’re wearing joggers and an old t-shirt? No one’s going to see you except the cinema’s cashier and they’re probably judging you for being there alone anyway – you might as give them something else to look you up and down for.

You never have to compromise

There’ll be no more arguing with your friends about which film to watch. You’ll never have to sit through a film you don’t want to ever again.

You can be spontaneous

Everyone is always so busy now and it’s hard to get all of your friends together for a spontaneous girls night. These things take planning and sometimes you don’t always want to wait to see that movie you’ve been dying to watch.

You can support your favourite independent cinemas

Admittedly, it can be daunting asking for a solo ticket at a huge cinema chain. So, paying a visit to some of your favourite local cinemas can not only be good for you, but it’ll support an industry that is, sadly, slowly dying. With fancy recliner seats and huge 4k screens, chain cinemas are slowly taking over; but you can’t beat the cosy atmosphere of an independent cinema. Some of my faves are Cottage Road Cinema, Ilkley Cinema and Hyde Park Picture House.

It’s great for your journey towards self-love

It’s so important to take time for yourself and learning to do things on your own is great for your self confidence. Who cares if you’re there alone? Taking a couple of hours out of your day and engrossing yourself in another world can alleviate any of those day-to-day worries that can clog up your mind.

Let me know in the comments if you love going to the cinema alone too!
